Essential Ingredients for Democratic Engagement

Following up on Excelsior University’s recognition as YWCA’s 2025 Mission Partner during their 25th Annual Resourceful Women’s Gala, the Center for Social Justice and the Civic Engagement Rope Team, in collaboration with the Underground Railroad Education Center and the YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, facilitated our most recent Democratic Engagement Dialogue session in a hybrid format from the YWCA. Together we explored Marmentini’s four essential ingredients for active citizenship: 1) Acquiring basic political knowledge about our country’s structure and processes. 2) Engaging in diverse dialogues to broaden your understanding and challenge your perspectives. 3) Pursuing civic empathy by understanding and acknowledging the problems surrounding us and our role in solving them. And 4) Engaging in community protagonism by taking action to solve local problems and create positive change.
