Caribbean American Heritage Month
National Caribbean American Heritage Month is observed each month of June to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Caribbean Americans to the United States. Established by presidential proclamation in 2006, the observance recognizes the profound influence of Caribbean immigrants and their descendants on the nation’s social, cultural, economic, and political development. Nearly 13 million people in the United States identify as having Caribbean ancestry, and Caribbean Americans have made significant contributions across numerous fields, including education, healthcare, business, science, government, literature, sports, and the arts. The month also highlights the rich diversity of Caribbean cultures, traditions, languages, music, and cuisine. In Florida, which is home to some of the nation’s largest Caribbean American communities, including people with roots in Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas, Caribbean Heritage Month provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the lasting impact of these communities on the state’s identity and cultural landscape.
